
Getting the Heat Right in High-Speed PET Blowing
Ever deal with “skinning”? It’s a nightmare. Your PET preform looks right on the outside, but the core is still cold. You end up with inconsistent bottles and a lot of wasted material because the heat just isn’t hitting the center. We’ve spent a lot of time fixing this for Krones Contiform S and Husky HyPET systems. We basically tweaked the infrared spectrum so the heat actually sinks in deep instead of just scorching the surface. The Power Problem When you’re running high-speed lines, you don’t have time to wait around. You need a massive amount of heat, and you need it in a tiny space. To make that happen, we use high-voltage setups. It lets us push way more wattage through the tube without making the lamp physically bigger. The result? The lamps hit their operating temperature fast. Really fast. When those preforms are flying through the oven, you need that aggressive heat ramp-up or you’re just guessing at your settings. The Secret is in the Glass We don’t just use standard clear quartz. That stuff lets too much energy bounce off. Instead, we use a specialized quartz glass with a proprietary coating. Think of it like a filter. It focuses the energy into the specific bands that PET actually likes to absorb. Instead of the heat bouncing away, it gets pushed straight into the center of the preform wall. And don’t worry about the installation. Whether you need R7s or Sk15 connectors, these are simple drop-in replacements. You just pop them in. No rewiring the oven or messing with your sockets. A Quick Heads-Up Here’s the thing: more penetration power means more heat inside your oven. If your ventilation is clogged or your cooling system is struggling, the ambient temperature is going to climb. If it gets too hot in there, your lamps will burn out way faster than they should. Just keep your airflow clear. It’s the easiest way to make sure your quartz lasts as long as possible.
