
Getting Your PET Heating Right: A Real Talk on Sidel and Krones Lamps
If you’re running a PET blowing line, you know the struggle. It’s a constant tug-of-war between getting enough heat into the preform and trying to keep your lamps from burning out every two weeks. When you stop buying OEM lamps for your Sidel Matrix B2B or Krones Contiform, you can’t just throw any old tube in there. If the infrared profile is off, you’ll end up with bottles that have weird, uneven walls. Nobody wants that.
Let’s talk power
These machines use shortwave IR lamps to get those preforms hot, and they do it fast. We build our tubes to match the original voltage and wattage exactly. Here’s the thing: high-wattage tubes are great for fast cycle times, but they push your power supply hard. I see people try to crank up the wattage to make up for old, cloudy reflectors. Don’t do that. You’ll just fry your lamps faster.
The gear inside
We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because the thermal shock when you flip the switch on or off is brutal. The glass needs to take that hit without cracking. Most of these use R7s or Sk15 connectors. It’s not just about the plug fitting the hole; it’s about making sure the electrical contact is tight so you don’t get any arcing. Some of our versions even have a special coating. It basically pushes the heat toward the preform instead of letting it waste away into the oven walls.
Making it work
The best part about using our alternatives for Krones or Sidel is that you save a bunch of money on maintenance without having to tweak your entire process. You just wire them up and go. But a quick heads-up. Stronger lamps mean a hotter oven. If your cooling fans are clogged with dust or your ventilation is acting up, the oven can’t breathe. If that heat has nowhere to go, your lamps will die early—no matter how good the quartz is. Keep those fans clean.
