
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Zones
Let’s be honest: putting high-voltage infrared lamps in a bathroom or any steamy area is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. You’re mixing water and electricity, which is a recipe for short circuits and nasty leaks. If you’re picking out a heater for these spots, look for an IP55 rating. Think of it as your safety net. It basically means the unit can handle dust and won’t freak out if it gets hit with a few splashes of water from different angles.
Stopping the Leaks
The real danger zone is where the heating element meets the power cord. When the air gets humid, condensation loves to settle on cold surfaces. If those terminals aren’t airtight, the moisture creates a little bridge for the electricity to travel where it shouldn’t. That’s how you get a ground fault. To stop this, we don’t mess around. We use silicone potting compounds and heat-shrink tubing with adhesive linings to seal everything shut. It stops “creepage”—which is just a fancy way of saying it keeps the electricity from crawling across the insulation.
Picking the Right Stuff
We use quartz glass for the elements because it’s tough. It can handle the shock of heating up and cooling down fast without just snapping. As for the body, powder-coated aluminum or stainless steel is the way to go. You don’t want your heater rusting away in a damp bathroom. But here is the tricky part: the seals. Extreme heat cycles can chew through standard rubber gaskets, making them shrink or crack over time. That’s why we use high-temp fluorosilicone seals. They actually hold up under the pressure.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Even with a great IP rating, you still need a dedicated GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). No shortcuts here. One thing to watch out for? Airflow. That IP55 shell is great for keeping water out, but it also traps heat inside. If you mount it too tight against a wall or in a cramped corner, the internal wiring basically bakes. If the air inside the housing gets too hot, the wire jackets get brittle and crack. Once that happens, your safety is gone. Give the unit some breathing room so it can stay cool and keep you safe.
