
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters from Shorting Out
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is basically like inviting a fight with steam and moisture. When that thick water vapor hits a hot quartz tube, it creates a path for electricity to wander where it shouldn’t. If your insulation isn’t up to the task, you’re looking at a ground fault or a nasty short circuit. To keep things safe, I always look at three main spots: the seals, the materials, and where everything plugs in.
Dealing with Humidity and Arcing
Here’s the thing: water droplets on the lamp surface make the air much less resistive. That’s a recipe for arcing. To stop that, we use high-purity quartz glass with a specific thickness so the voltage stays stable. Inside, the tungsten filament sits in a halogen gas mix. It’s not just about making the bulb last longer—that gas pressure helps keep the heat stable. You also want to make sure there’s plenty of breathing room between the live terminals and the metal chassis. If they’re too close, moisture can create a “carbon path” over time, and that’s when things get dicey.
The Battle at the Connection Points
Most of these units fail at the connector. Simple as that. Whether you’re using R7s or SK15 sockets, they have to be built for a wet environment. I highly recommend using silicone gaskets or heat-shrink tubing where the wires hit the terminals. Why? Because if steam sneaks into the socket, the terminals oxidize. That creates resistance, which leads to heat, which eventually melts your plastic housing. Not a great look.
The Real-World Trade-offs
It’s tempting to go for high-wattage lamps because they heat up the room instantly. But that puts a lot of stress on your wiring. A 2000W lamp in a tiny bathroom creates an intense amount of localized heat. You’ve got to make sure your wire gauge can handle that constant load without the voltage dropping. If the wires get too hot, the insulation wears out faster, which just opens the door for more moisture to get in. And please, double-check your ground bonds. A solid earth connection is really your only safety net when a seal eventually gives way.
